Results from Follow Up Survey

Several of the hosts met up today to look over the results from the survey we sent out earlier this week to all attendees from this year. Here are some of the results mixed in with our own thoughts. Feel free to send us a message on any more thoughts you may have.

  • New shirts
  • Enforce 1/2hr talks
  • Have printed placards / signs / 8.5”x11” sheets pre-printed with every talk we already know about
  • Have blanks for #3
  • Make talk time/placement a matter of putting your sheet up on the wall
    • Maybe have 2 prints of each presentation, one goes on the big board, one goes outside the room after scheduling
  • For the website, make a test site.  Never edit code on the live site again.
  • Mass mailings should never come from “root”
  • Tech wise, the more the organization/website/tech looks like we’re a bunch of hobbyists, the lower attendance / donations we’ll get.
  • Donation assumptions, if we take that route which we think we should:
    • DBA / Incorporate
    • Tax ID
    • Checking account
    • Paypal account, etc…  donations@barcamproc.org
  • Swag give away:  Not a lot of stuff, very noisy, no on stopped talking, people were not all present
    • Make swag give away a part of the presentations
    • It could be a sticker, or a book, but probably relevant to the talk
    • Swag for helping clean up!
  • Barriers
    • Self hosting
    • Well defined meeting times for hosts
    • Get people outside of csh
  • Skill levels
    • Maybe “intro” level talks are tagged, everything else is a free-for-all
    • Emphasize that BarCamp is not just about tech
    • BarCamp is my 20 minute presentation about how much I love ________.
    • Ok I know that’s awful
  • No start of day intros, except by the hosts
    • Ask for volunteers for stuff at the beginning of the day
    • Make personal introductions a part of your presentation
    • Maybe a raise hands survey of what you already know about the presentation topic
  • I think the hosts need a schedule
    • Who is sitting at the sign-in table
    • Who is in the hall answering questions
    • Maybe we need different color shirts?
  • Figure out how to let people ask/offer to give their talk AGAIN
  • Track presentation times online somehow
  • Medium sized redesign of our website?  Or does some other local BarCamp group have better software?
  • Better name tags.  e-mail / twitter / facebook / whatever
  • Use cotweet for @barcamproc
  • Strive to stream 2 rooms of talks for the next event
    • We need at least 1 more person to help with that, and equipment

My presentation for BarCampRoc. A little something I slapped together in about half an hour to show off what I had learned about ClearType and how it can look really cool. If you get a minute of enjoyment out of this and appreciate how font smoothing works, I’m happy.

2) If you missed any of the presentations that took place in the auditorium, we have them posted online at:

3) As several of our hosts are graduating this year, we are looking for a few more people to help organize the event. Send us an email if you are interested.

4) If you wrote a blog entry or have any pictures from this year, please send us the link and we will post it on our site.

5) If you want us to promote any Rochester events or meet ups, send us a message.
